Do Sphynx require special care?
Yes. Sphynx will require bathing, ear cleaning, toe and eye cleaning and of course lots of warm places to snuggle. Depending on your cat, bathing may be as frequent as weekly or as seldom as monthly. Sphynx produce body oil – like all animals – but they have no hair to absorb it or disperse it. They get kind of grimy and gunky if you don’t wash it off. We use baby body wash, or a mild body wash on all our girls. We do ear cleaning at the same time with Q-tips and Pet Ear Wash (there are several brands available). Baby wipes work great on toe nails and a warm wash rag without soap works great on their eyes.
We will be happy to show you these processes. If you do these regularly from the time the kitten comes home they will generally not fuss at all when it is bath time.
What kind of litter do you use?
When we had only one, and then later two, cats we religiously used MiMi’s Litter – it is a crystal litter – the only place we have found it is WalMart. There are other crystal litters on the market, but in our opinion this one is the BEST. This works fine for one or two cats.
When we went overnight from two to four cats the MiMi’s Litter could not keep up! The litter just became saturated too quickly. We recently started using Arm & Hammer Multi-Cat Extra Strength Clumping Litter and we are very pleased so far.
Queens and new litters use a biodegradable and non-toxic litter – you don’t want the kitties to get all gunked up in the clumping litter, or to possibly ingest some of it. We use the corn based litter.
What kind of litter box do you use?
Well, we have two open top boxes – messy, messy! We have one covered box with the door removed – better, but a pain to scoop! And….(drumroll please…) we have three Clever Kitty top-entry boxes – these are the best!!! They are available at PetSmart for about $33 and there is so little mess and so little odor from these boxes. All the cats use them and adjusted well to the addition of these type of boxes. **A similar box can be made from a storage tote and lid for about $7.**
What kind of food do you feed?
We have transitioned to feeding a raw diet. We are unbelievably pleased with the results. This is very easy, cost effective, and great for the cats. We understand that this choice will not be for everyone and we can discuss options with you. If you would like to learn more about raw diets, we can send you some information.
As a general rule, we will start introducing canned kitten food to kittens two weeks before they go home so that they will be used to it before leaving us. If you choose to feed commercial food instead of raw, we recommend a high quality canned food.
What is included with my kitten?
If you pick up your kitten, you will receive your kitten's shot and vet records, TICA or CFA registration, a small bag of food to get you started and a one year health guarantee. Please review the health guarantee in the contract when signing.
If your kitten is shipped to you, you will receive the items above, plus a carrier and small blanket and a health certificate as required by the airlines.
All the kittens will have had their three rounds of shots, rabies vaccination and their spay/neuter.
Do you ship kittens?
We will ship kittens (within the US) on a case by case basis. The cost should be between $250 – 350 depending on location, flight times, and available airlines. If we feel that it is not in the best interest of the kitten to ship, due to weather, flight length, etc we will let you know at the time of your inquiry.
Tell me about declawing?
There is a huge controversy about declawing cats. Here are several links that can provide more information:
All of our cats have their claws and we have NO problems with inappropriate scratching or clawing. If you provide appropriate surfaces for them to scratch (a natural cat behavior), and praise and reward them when they do use their posts you should have no problems.
If your kitten does have bad scratching manners there are lots of alternatives to re-train or you can use “SoftPaws” - http://www.softpaws.com/. We have not personally had to use them, but breeder friends have and we have heard good things.
Why are your kittens spayed or neutered before leaving your home?
**Spayed and neutered cats can be shown in the Show/Alter classes at competitions.
**They also make better, more relaxed pets. If you have ever been around a whole male or a female in heat you will understand this completely.
**It is in their best interest to be spayed or neutered at a young age. They will recover more quickly from the surgery, males will not have started any spraying behavior and females will be at a lower risk for developing health problems. Unspayed female cats that are not bred can develop Pyometra, an often fatal disease.
**Making the decision to breed cats or any other animal needs to be a lengthy and thorough process. Animals require lots of care and attention and take up much more time than you realize. We do not want one of our kittens to have an *oops* litter – there are plenty of mixed breed cats available online, at shelters, and in parking lots all over the country.
Tell me about your deposit and payment requirements?
We will not take deposits on unborn kittens. When the litter has arrived and mom and babies are all healthy and thriving we will begin taking deposits – usually about week two or three.
- We require a $300 non-refundable deposit to hold your kitten.
- We require a signed contract for the purchase of each kitten and prior to accepting your deposit.
- The balance due on your kitten can be paid in installments up to 14 days prior to you picking up or us shipping your kitten.
- When we are at the 14 day mark the balance must be paid in full.
- We will accept postal money orders, bank drawn cashier’s checks, cash (if local), or PayPal.
- You will be provided with a receipt for your deposit and each subsequent payment.
** We have had people ask us about bartering - We are not opposed to this idea.
There are several items that we are looking for or eventually hoping to have. If you have something that you think we might be interested in that is the same or higher value than one of our kittens, don't be afraid to ask us about it.**
Kittens will be available at approximately 14-16 weeks – this will vary slightly with us getting spay/neuter appts for multiple kittens, health certificates for flights and possibly trying to coordinate multiple flights at the same time. We do both have full time jobs so we will try our best to get multiple vet appointments or flights on the same days.
Why do you require a contract?
Contracts are required for several reasons:
*A contract protects you.
*A contract protects us.
*And, most importantly the contract protects the kitten – which we have a responsibility for since we helped to bring it into the world.
****Please note: We reserve the right to refuse to sell a kitten to anyone, at any time, for any reason.***
